President Donald Trump has warned Republicans that they “will not win again” if they continue to back Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell. In a statement just days after his impeachment trial, Mr Trump said: “Mitch is a dour, sullen and unsmiling political hack and if Republican senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again.” Mr Trump said the party “can never again be respected or strong” with leaders such as Mr McConnell, describing him as having a “lack of political insight, wisdom, skill and personality”.
