Houthi leader: ‘We promise a “surprise” in the Red Sea’
The leader of the Houthi rebels, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, promised a “surprising” military operation in the Red Sea, in his televised speech on Thursday.
Referring to the Houthi attacks on ships passing through the Red Sea, he said: “Our military operations will continue and we will continue to advance and take surprising steps that our enemies do not expect at all.”
In mid-November, the Houthi militias in Yemen, supported by Iran, repeatedly attacked international commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait using drone and missile attacks in their possession, claiming that these actions were in solidarity with the Palestinians in their war in Gaza against Israel. The Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have disrupted international shipping and forced companies to take the longer and more expensive route around Africa instead of through the Red Sea. At the same time, these attacks raised concerns about the expansion of the war in the Gaza Strip to the entire Middle East.

Since last month, the United States and Britain have been attacking Houthi positions in Yemen in response to Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.
