This is the TV version of Jan Jekielekβs interview with Martin Gurri. The longer-form version was released on Epoch TV on October 8, 2024.
Martin Gurri is the author of the βThe Fifth Waveβ Substack column and author of βThe Revolt of the Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium.β
In this interview, Martin Gurri talks to Jan Jekielek about the radical transformation of the media and information ecosystems.
He argues: βAll the institutions of the 21st century were started in the 20th which was the heyday of the βTop Down: I Talk, You Listen’ model of organizing humanity. That model required a semi monopoly over information to be legitimate. That got blown away by the internet. So for the last 20 years, I’ve seen this revolt of the public. This is, of course, the title of my book, but the subtitle was βThe Crisis of Authority.β In the 21st century, the elite have seen their authority completely hemorrhage away, and they are on the warpath about it. They are on the warpath about it right now. They’re trying to create censorship structures. The elite is giving us reasons why democracy can’t survive unless we censor information and communication that the everyday public has access to.β
βYou need to allow us to censor it so we can protect the truth, all right? And of course, those of us who come from Cuba have heard this story before, and it’s not about truth, it’s about control.β
