This is the full version of Jan Jekielekβs interview with Gordon Chang. The interview was first released on Epoch TV on April 16, 2025.
As the U.S.-China trade war continues to escalate, Jan Jekielek sat down with China analyst Gordon Chang.
βJamie Dimon said this: βWhy donβt you just pick up the phone?β Well, the reason is weβve had that attitude for five decades β¦ and look where itβs gotten us. So, if the Chinese want to do something about our tariffs, itβs up to them to pick up the phone,β says Chang.
What is the current state of play when it comes to Trumpβs tariff strategy? Is it working in Americaβs favor?
βThe only way China wins this trade war is if it gets Trump to preemptively surrender,β says Chang. βThis is an existential struggle. Itβs more than just a trade war. Itβs more than just a tariff war. And we better win it.β
And how is Xi Jinpingβs leadership being challenged inside China?
βGeneral He, I think, was sacked not by Xi Jinping, but by the adversaries of Xi Jinping in the Chinese military β¦ we have seen all these unexplained and unusual disappearances of military officers, especially since the middle of 2023,β says Chang. βI think this is the most dangerous moment in history.β
