Day #25 – In Brief
- US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he hoped there would be no further action on Iran as a carrier strike group approaches the region, saying his warnings prevented Iran’s execution of 837 people.
- US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff called Iran’s deadly crackdown on protestors “horrific” and said a diplomatic solution was possible with Tehran if it signaled change.
- A senior Iranian official declined to specify when authorities might lift a near-total internet blackout which began on Jan. 8 just before authorities ramped up deadly suppression of unrest.
- New eyewitness accounts from Iran chronicled attacks by security forces earlier this month on funerals and abuses of detainees, as authorities warned of severe penalties for protestors including charges of ‘waging war on God’ that can carry the death penalty.
This is a developing story that HO1 will continue to monitor.
