Hantaviruses are a group of zoonotic viruses (transmitted from animals to humans) belonging to the family Hantaviridae.
First identified during the Korean War (1950s). Named after the Hantan River in South Korea. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a zoonotic, viral respiratory disease caused by hantaviruses.
Transmission: Hantavirus spreads mainly through aerosolised particles contaminated by infected rodents.
- Inhalation of virus particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva & direct contact with contaminated surfaces.
- Person-to-person transmission is generally NOT observed, especially in most hantavirus types. Exception: Some rare strains in South America (e.g., Andes virus) have shown limited human transmission.
