Visit of the HQ of IDF Northern Command

Deep underground, to the headquarters from where the fighting in the Northern Command is conducted

The “pit” of the Northern Command has always been a mysterious and intriguing place, but in recent times, when the northern sector is heating up, and the questions about the war in the north are rising, it has become even more fascinating. In the midst of a war in the south, when military and political attention is split between two hot sectors, there are many questions that arise for all of us. In order to try to answer some of them, we got to the beating heart that flows all the operational processes that happen in the command. “The fighting against Hezbollah looks and will look completely different from what we are currently experiencing in the south,” declares Lt. Col. S., the head of the operative branch in the operations wing, “Lebanon is a country, not a Strip, this changes the picture completely.

The commander has a fundamental part in managing the current operations, in increasing readiness and of course – in leading all command battle procedures. For maximum readiness, when the commander of the command is the one who determines the vector. In order to do all of this in the best possible way, the command established special learning teams. “There are many things we learned in the current campaign,” states Lt. Col. S. “We want to draw conclusions that will help us improve in combat. For example, one of the insights from the maneuver is preservation of the technique of collecting the intelligence information, and translating it into a response by fire.

The soldiers who fought in the south acquired combat experience in many areas, such as the threat of the fighting underground and managing a combat routine in enemy territory. “In our sector there are confrontations that we were not required to face in Gaza,” shares Lt. Col. S., “We conduct adapted exercises for all the brigades and battalions that arrive here.” A key element that the Command integrates into the exercises is the difference in tactical readiness. The expected combat spaces in the north are different and diverse – open, mountainous and rural terrain compared to the built-up and dense terrain in the Strip.
