South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared “emergency martial law” in the country, Yonhap reported citing the presidential administration.

Martial law declared by the President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk-yeol has become the first in 44 years, The Korea Herald recalls. Last time martial law was declared after the democratic uprising on May 18, 1980 against the South Korean military administration.

On December 3, President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the imposition of “emergency martial law.” He explained that the opposition’s attempts to impeach a number of prosecutors and its rejection of the Cabinet’s budget proposals were the reasons. South Korea’s leading opposition Toburo Democratic Party summoned its lawmakers to parliament.

“Crowds Gather Outside South Korea’s National Assembly”

The ruling party and the opposition condemned this decision. The South Korean National Assembly building has been blocked off. South Korean Ministry of Defense: Martial Law will stay until President Yoon gives the order to lift Martial law!
