Saudi Arabia calls for UNSC reform as U.S. vetoes Gaza ceasefire resolution

Riyadh has called for reforming the UN Security Council after the U.S. vetoed a Gaza ceasefire resolution submitted by Algeria, the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s regret over the veto of the draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and its surroundings. <…> There is a need now more than ever to reform the Security Council to carry out its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security with credibility and without double standards,” the statement reads.

The document called for an immediate ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone, rejected the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians and emphasized commitment to the two-state solution to the conflict.

Thirteen of the 15 members of the Security Council, including Russia and China, voted in favor of the draft resolution, while the UK abstained. The U.S. was the only country voting against.
