At the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference, Jan Jekielek sits down with Kari Lake, Trump’s choice to lead Voice of America, to discuss whether Elon Musk is right about wanting to scrap the state-funded media network.
“I understand the sentiment. … But I do think it’s premature to say that. This is an 83-year [old] outlet that has been doing in many of those years, good work,” Lake says. “When you look at the budget, it’s relatively a small budget item for the big work it could do.”
The role of director of Voice of America is officially nominated by the head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), a role that requires Senate approval, and must then be approved by a majority vote of the International Broadcasting Advisory Board. L. Brent Bozell III, Trump’s pick to head USAGM, has not been confirmed by the Senate yet.
Kari Lake on freedom of speech: “We want freedom and free speech for everybody in the world. We want a flow of information for everybody in the world. And it’s really frightening to see this type of censorship that’s playing out in Europe, and frankly, it’s been happening here. I mean, I was censored during COVID… And you know what it’s like trying to get around the firewall in China, there is suppression of information, and we want to make sure that that’s not happening. I thought that Vice President Vance did an incredible job. It was a strong speech. He laid out where the United States of America stands on this issue, and he didn’t mince words, and everybody knew exactly where we stood when he walked off that stage. We’re pushing back against this globalist agenda and pushing freedom for all.”
